Side by Side

In the year I have been at Side by Side I have made lots of new friends and grown a lot in confidence. I really love the project as I feel I have made a difference to people’s views of LGBT issues and that makes me feel like I have achieved something. I wouldn’t change this experience for the world!

We had Side by Side in earlier this term. They were excellent and every school should seize this opportunity to make use of this innovative resourse using young people – Kim Wilson, Head of PSHE, King Edward VII School

Volunteers meet on alternate Thursday evenings 5.30 – 8.00 p.m. – city centre venue

Side by Side is our LGBT peer education project delivered by volunteers aged 16-19 and available for schools, colleges and other youth organisations across Sheffield to book.

It uses drama, groupwork and discussion to raise awareness of issues faced by LGBT young people, challenge homophobia and present positive and realistic images of what it’s like to be young and LGBT in Sheffield. Members of the volunteer team are also available to give staff training or talks around LGBT issues.

Any young person can apply to become a Side by Side volunteer – there are young people on the team of all sexualities. There is a short informal interview and we ask for a minimum level of commitment. On being recruited volunteers take part in an initial training programme and then meet for support and ongoing training from workers throughout the year. All volunteer hours are accredited through the Youth Achievement Awards.
